About Us

The purposes of NIATM shall be to encourage an active interest in all areas of mathematics and mathematics education, to afford a medium of interchange of views regarding the teaching of mathematics and related disciplines, and to further the study of problems relating to the teaching of mathematics and computer science.
                                    

History

NIATM was organized in 1986-1987 as an affiliate of the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics to provide teachers of mathematics with the opportunity to meet, learn, and socialize at 4 dinner meeting per year.
Previous featured speakers include Dr. John Dossey, Dr.. Zalman Usiskin, Dr. Alan Zollman, Carol Kajor, Tom Shilgalis, John McConnell, and Gail Burrill. Topics have included curriculum, technology, manipulatives, assessment, and master teacher.


NIATM is currently an affiliate of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.

 

Activities

  • NIATM sponsors a math competition each year to encourage math excellence and foster friendly competition among teams preparing for the ICTM Regional competition.
  • NIATM supports mathematics study by offering a $500 grant to a high school senior chosen from students who submit a project of mathematical interest.
  • NIATM strives to support mathematics education at all grade levels (elementary, middle school, high school, and college) and all ability levels.
  • NIATM is an approved provider of Continuing Professional Development Units (CPDU).
